Sam
Azzaro
Professor Sam Azzaro joined the Keene State College Art Program in 1969
after receiving his MFA from Alfred University. His area of specialization
within the Art Department is Ceramics. Much of Professor Azzoro’s
recent work with ceramics has coincided with the development and construction
of the Ceramic’s facilities’ wood firing kilns. The work he
has shown in the past two Keene State College Art Faculty exhibitions have
either included pieces that have been woodfired, gas fired or both. Most
recently, in 2004, his work, Woodfired Plate was selected for inclusion
in the New Hampshire Institute of Arts Ceramic Biennial Exhibition; one
of only 80 out of 178 entries that were accepted. The exhibition is scheduled
to open October 22, 2004. His creative endeavors have always incorporated
a certain amount of experimentation in firing techniques ranging from low
temperature glazing techniques to high temperature firing techniques. He
has continued to learn about various color possibilities with these various
glazes. Color has always dominated his direction in working with clay: including
high temperature firing and low firing over glazes; inlaying colored clays
into white clay and then incorporating low temperature glazes; color variation
of various clays and glazes in both wood and soda firing kilns; and lastly
the addition of what are called terra sigillata (colored clays) over claybodies
in the wood kiln firings.
Professor Azzaro is an active member of League of New Hampshire Craftsmen,
exhibits his work regularly, and is included in the collections of Darthmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center, California Polytechnical State University and the Markem
Corporation.
