Henry
Freedman Professor Freedman received his Ph.D. in Art History in 1970 from Johns Hopkins University. Although his specialization was originally in the area of early 20th Century Art, as the sole Art Historian he has been responsible for teaching all historical periods and art appreciation. Professor Henry Freedman brings to the department not only his vast expertise as an Historian but also his wealth of experience as a prolific practicing studio artist. He is truly a valued teacher and mentor for many Keene State students. In part because of the success of the his Art History course contributions to Keene State College, Professor Freedman was awarded the college’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 1975. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he creates works of mixed-media art. Professor Freedman describes the works: “Clock without time, song without music, story without plot, and experience without reason are the subjects of some of his collages and assemblages. As in dreams, these images, derived from the subconscious, bring together seemingly accidental elements to express timeless fantasies, rather than describe visual realities.” These wonderful drawings and sculptures have been exhibited not only in the Keene State College Art Faculty Exhibitions at the Thorne Sagendorph Art Gallery, but also at the University of New Hampshire Gallery. He is represented by McGowan Fine Art Gallery in Concord, New Hampshire.
