Marsha
Hewitt
Associate Professor Marsha Hewitt received her MFA from Mass College of
Art in Graphic Design. Before coming to Keene State in 1997, she taught
at two colleges/universities, the last being the University of Nebraska
at Kearney where she developed the first computer graphics lab and was tenured
as Associate Professor in 1995. Professor Hewitt’s areas of specialization
are Artist Books and Encaustic Painting (painting with beeswax). She has
created one of a kind hand-made books for the past 15 years. Some books
are made using handmade papers, leather, earth and other natural materials.
Other books combine graphic designs created on the computer with mixed media
and beeswax. Her paintings are abstract, color studies created using encaustics
(beeswax) that reflect her fascination with the luminosity of the encaustic
colors and the effects that one can achieve with transparency. Some of her
paintings are abstract paintings that focus on color, composition and the
creation of a sense of deep space. Others works are more graphic in nature
and rely on the transferring of computerized text and imagery. She experiments
with printing images directly from the computer and then applying the encaustic
wax over the surface of the computer image in a series of layers. Professor
Hewitt has exhibited her artwork in over 60 exhibitions across the country.
Her recent shows in the New England area include exhibits at the gallery
at UNH, juried exhibits at the Cambridge Artist Association in Cambridge,
MA and a one person exhibit at the Mils Gallery in Concord, NH. Her work
is in the collection of the Chevron Corporation, Boston University, the
Northrop Corporation, Software Options, and Fiduciary Trust.
