Research Interests
We are interested in investigating reactions in the solid state using state-or-the-art research methods including single crystal x-ray crystallography and a variety of physical methods including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infra Red and Visible-Ultraviolet spectroscopy. One of our current projects uses laser or monochromatic light sources to irradiate laser dye molecules in the crystals to investigate its reactivity in the solid state. When irradiating the long wavelength tail of an absorption band, the [2+2] cycloaddition of many photoreactive crystals proceeds homogeneously as a single-crystal-to-single-crystal conversion. Solid-state [2 + 2] photodimerization reactions are strictly controlled by the packing arrangement of the molecule in the crystal. In these cases intermediate stages of the transformations can be analyzed crystallographically.

In a second project we are interested in the synthesis and characterization of transition metal compounds bonded to thiosemicarbazones and bis(thiosemicarbazones) which are biologically important and have excellent polydentate ligands for coordination. New complexes are planned involving heterocyclic, aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes, ketones, dialdeydes, diketones and aldehyde/ketones. Both spectral and structural data are being used to select thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes for their antitumor and antiviral activity.
