Communication,
Journalism & Philosophy
Department
Advising
Sessions
These
sessions
are
held
by faculty
for
all
undeclared
majors
who
have
an interest
in the
areas
of communication,
journalism,
and
philosophy
as a
major
or minor
course
of study.
This
is a
time
to have
your
questions
answered
and
to receive
advice
about
course
selection
prior
to each
registration
period
each
semester.
Senior
Project
(COMM
479)
All
students
majoring
in communication
are required
to take
this capstone
course
after
completing
Principles
of Communication
(COMM
175),
Logical
Argumentation
(PHIL
100),
and a
theory
course.
Several
theory
courses
serve
to satisfy
this requirement.
They are:
Theory
of Communication
and Rhetoric
(COMM
36), Media
History
and Theory
(JRN 310),
Aesthetics
(PHIL
350),
and Film
Theory
(FILM
355).
Because
the
proposal
for
this
semester-long
research
project
is due
on the
first
day
of the
class,
advance
planning
and
effort
is necessary.
To help
you
with
this
planning,
we require
that
you
attend
a meeting
about
selecting
your
topic,
choosing
a theoretical
framework,
and
completing
the
initial
research.
This
course
also
has
a performance
requirement.
To give
you
a sense
of the
completed
projects
and
the
expectations
of this
presentation
requirement,
we insist
that
you
attend
an evening
of the
Senior
Project
Presentations
the
semester
before
you
begin
your
project.

Awards
Ceremony
At
the
end
of the
spring
semester,
outstanding
students
in communication,
journalism,
and philosophy
are recognized
at a department
luncheon
attended
by faculty
and students.
Plaques
are awarded
and the
students'
accomplishments
are celebrated.
