Courses in the English major emphasize reading closely in a wide range of cultural and intellextual contexts, and writing with purpose, clarity, and sophistication. Majors complete an introductory sequence focused on textual study (English 200) and literary form and history (English 300). Majors also complete a full-year advanced sequence. The first course (English 395) acquaints students with a particular aspect of the field of English studies and exposes them to primary and secondary texts, as well as historical and cultural contexts. English majors then take the advanced seminar (ENG 495) to complete the year-long sequence. The English department faculty are proud of their central role in delivering the college's liberal arts curriculum. Every semester, including the summer sessions, we offer students from across the college a wide range of courses in writing and literature. Students have the opportunity to study classical literature, medieval and Renaissance literature, American and British literature, American Indian literature, Russian literature, and Carribean writers. English faculty also offer courses in interdisciplinary programs such as Women's Studies, American Studies, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Whether you are working on an English major or minor, or looking for an interesting integrative studies elective in language, literature and culture, the English faculty invite you to join us!
