Background:
The Vermont State Heptathlon was established in 1976 by Dr. Jerry Jasinski
who was the Track and Field Coach at Springfield High School at the time.
The event was held in Springfield, Vermont for the first three years and
subsequently moved to Hadley Field at Bellows Falls Union High School in
1979. It was held at Hadley Field for the past 21 years under the continued
direction of Dr. Jasinski. Last year it was moved to Springfield High School
to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the event. This year it was
back again at Hadley Field. With only 10 competitors initially, the
event has grown to where 30-60 competitors enter annually for the title
of Vermont's Heptathlon Champion. Steve Zemianek (Mount Anthony Union High
School) has been a most able assistant over the course of this event as
meet score keeper and sounding board for providing continued improvements
in the operation of the event. The 25th Anniversary was held in his honor
shortly after his passing away in May, 2000. This event has been
held in concert with the Vermont State Decathlon Championships
held concurrently at the same site on the same days for the past 26 years.
During the first 6 years all competitors engaged in a 5 event Pentathlon
with all the events in one day. In 1982 the Pentathlon was changed from
a 1-day to a 2-day Heptathlon event to be in compliance with the Olympic
format. Therefore, some records for events held then but no longer continued
are listed along with the current records and previous heptathlon winners.
Many of the competitors have gone on to successful track and field careers
in college and/or have engaged in productive professional careers after
this engaging and challenging experience. The Knights of Columbus (Councils
#2628, Springfield; and #753, Bellows Falls) have provided financial support
for this event allowing for t-shirts for all entrants and the top 20 competitors
to recieve trophies (top 5) and plaques (next 15) for their competitive
efforts. The Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Brattleboro, VT have
generously provided soft drinks for the contestants at the conclusion of
the event for the past 17 years.
