Certified & Licensed Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor

    

                               

 

     Margaret A  Smith is a tenure track faculty member in Health Science in the School of Professional & Graduate Studies at Keene State College in Keene, NH.  She earned her B.A. in Psychology at Clark University, 1985, and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology at Boston College, 1992.  She earned her doctoral degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, focusing on higher education and alcohol and other drugs.

Dr. Smith's research focuses on college women and alcohol use. Her dissertation was entitled Women's Ways of Drinking:  College Women, High-Risk Alcohol Use and Related Consequences. She is also interested in the history of both college drinking as well as historical and global perspectives of women's alcohol and other drug use.

Dr. Smith has earned her licensure (NH) and certification (VT) in alcohol and other drug counseling.  She is a member of the National Association of Alcohol and Other Drug Professionals, and its state's affiliate New Hamphire Association of Alcohol and Other Drug Professionals (NHADACA), the International Coalition of Addiction Studies Educators, the American Counseling Association and several other national, regional and local committees.

Dr. Smith's prior work includes prevention, intervention and treatment in such positions as a case manager in elder services, a substance abuse counselor in a hospital setting, and a college alcohol and other drug educator. Her specialties include addiction, elder substance abuse, women, trauma, gerontology, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual culture and Heterosexism reduction, diversity, and higher education.

As a member of the Keene State College community she is involved as a consultant to the Social Norms committe and a member of the Diversity Committee's the Safe Zone Committee, the Women Studies Program, and the Health Science curriculum committee. 

Dr. Smith's usual courses include, but are not limited to, Alcohol and Other Drugs: The Fundamentals; Addiction:  Research, Theory & Practice; and Advanced Treament Methods and Techniques in Addiction.  She has also taught in the Health Science core teaching Health and Wellness and the Senior Seminar in Health Science.
