W. H. Brown and C. S. Foote, "Organic Chemistry," Second Edition (Saunders, Fort Worth, 1997), and accompanying study guide. Saunders provides a helpful website associated with organic chemistry in general, and with Brown and Foote in particular. There is also a site specifically for support of the textbook, which requires a password to enter. Hehre, Shusterman, and Nelson, "The Molecular Modeling Workbook for Organic Chemistry" is an optional purchase; it includes a multiplatform viewer (SpartanView) for images that you will be seeing in class. |

Software |
ChemDraw and Chem3D are available from Cambridge Scientific Computing, Inc.. These are useful for manipulating images of organic molecules. Many of the pages in this site use the free (but somewhat bulky) combination of Netscape 3.0 or higher and the molecular visualization plugin Chime. To most academic settings, Netscape may be downloaded for free, and to all, Chime may be downloaded for free. A tutorial on the use and programming of Chime may be found at Eric Martz's site at UMass. To check out your Chime installation here, try my molecular viewer. This viewer has examples organized by functional group. |

Classes |
Chemistry 221 lectures are Monday and Friday at 11:00 AM - 12:20 PM in Room 102, Science. Problem and reading assignments may be given in class; you will be responsible for all material given in lectures. I am trying to make web versions of my handouts available. In some cases, these are cheesy imitations of the real thing. In some cases, they have been enhanced by the presence of 3D structures or other bonus items. There's only one way to find out which. These pages will be updated fairly frequently, so check back. I also take requests... |

Grades |
The overall course grade will have the following contributions:

Problems |
One of the most valuable aids for learning organic chemistry is doing problems. Problem assignments will be made; it is your responsibility to consider them carefully. The Study Guide is often helpful in this regard. |
||||||||||||
Problem Sets |
There will be 3 problem sets. These may be worked on collaboratively, but each student is responsible for turning in a complete set of answers in his or her own handwriting. Each student is also responsible for the material examined in problem sets, so be sure you understand what you wrote down! |

Review Sessions |
Review sessions will be held at an appropriate time before each exam. No new material will be covered |

Office Hours |
Office hours will be in Room 228 Sciences, from 12:30-1:30 PM Monday and from 1-2 PM Friday. Other times may be arranged with Mr. Blatchly. |
