This page makes me think of my father, Homer Eaton Stavely, Sr., and my mother's description of him: "Homer was addicted to newspapers." Growing up in Terre Haute, Indiana, in the 1950s I remember special trips after church to the Hotel Deming to buy a Saint Louis Post-Dispatch. Once in a great while we were able to get a Sunday New York Times. My father died in 1973, a few years after the ARPANET began and before it had morphed into the Internet. He was learning to use minicomputers, though, and had he lived longer I am confident that he would have been net connected. He would be connected now - we bought our first television set in 1952 in order to follow Adlai Stevenson's campaign for the US presidency against the unstoppable Dwight Eisenhower.
