• ionize gas molecules
• accelerate ionized molecules
• focus beam of accelerated ionized molecules
• separate ions by mass and charge with a magnetic-sector analyzer
• detect ion beams with Faraday cup collectors
• amplify and process signal
• switch between sample gas and standard gas
• calculate isotopic ratios
