Stable Isotopes in Plants

Through photosynthesis, plants utilize water from the soil and CO2 from the atmosphere to create carbohydrates. The hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of water extracted from plants, and the carbon isotope composition of plant cellulose and other organic matter, provides important information about the interaction of the plants with their environment. Such stable isotope studies are particularly useful in investigating global climate change.
